Everything You Need to Know About Navy Sexual Abuse

The Royal Navy is a widely respected institution that plays an important role in our society. Being part of the navy is a badge of honour for the many servicemen and women who patrol our seas. That being said, navy personnel are not always treated with respect; allegations of navy sexual abuse are becoming more prevalent and survivors of this devastating crime fear speaking out due to the esteemed nature of this organisation.

Navy sexual abuse can impact both men and women, however, women are more vulnerable due to the male-dominated and hierarchical nature of the organisation. Due to the culture of misogyny existing within the armed forces, women who experience navy sexual abuse or harassment are less likely to report their experience for fear they may not be believed by their male counterparts.

In October 2022, former naval officer Sophie Brook serving in the elite submarine service told Sky News “There is sexual assault, sexual harassment, and misogyny is widespread within the Submarine Service.” When Brooks first published her findings, she was contacted by other women who reported similar experiences, ranging from minor sexual assault to rape.

Instead of receiving support from the navy, Brooks is still waiting for the outcome of her inquiry to be released. She has been shunned from all communication with the navy and left in limbo as she awaits justice for her traumatic experience. This seems to be a common pattern for women in the armed forces.
