Everything You Need to Know about Royal Air Force (RAF) Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse is a grave issue that can occur in any organisation. One organisation that we are seeing increasing complaints in is the Royal Air Force (RAF).

Survivors of RAF sexual abuse often face unique challenges due to the hierarchical and close-knit nature of military life. For many, the courage to come forward is met with fears of repercussions, stigma, or disbelief.

In 2023, a female ex-corporal, given the pseudonym ‘Sam’ to protect her anonymity, came forward and told the BBC that she was sexually assaulted in her sleep by a male member of the forces in 2018 and felt that she had to brush it under the carpet due to the “boys club” environment she found herself in. When she reported the assault, Sam was “left hung out to dry” by the RAF.

In response to Sam’s case, an RAF spokesperson said, “historic cases like this have led to the introduction of a zero-tolerance policy to send a clear message that unacceptable sexual behaviour will not be tolerated”.

Sam’s case demonstrates a lack of concern for the welfare and safety of female members of the forces and further exemplifies the culture of misogyny existing at the organisation. Sam came forward about the RAF sexual abuse she experienced, but unfortunately, many survivors will not out of fear that they, too, may be hung out to dry.
