Sports Club Sexual Abuse: Make A Claim

Sports clubs are supposed to provide a safe space for young people to exercise and practice extracurricular activities with friends. However, coaches who run these sports clubs can abuse their positions of power and subject children and teenagers to sexual abuse.

In May 2024, former karate champion and sensei in charge of the Karate Union of Great Britain  (KUGB) Andrew Sherry, was jailed for two years after being found guilty of sports club sexual abuse.  Sherry, now 80 years old, founded the Red Triangle Karate Club in Everton before retiring in 2022. 

Sherry was viewed by his students as a ‘hero’; this level of status and respect from those around him allowed him to lure his victims in and sexually assault them. Andrew Sherry was found guilty of indecent assault on a child under 16, related to an offence in the 1980s and four counts of sexual assault of a male, relating to offences against an 18-year-old in 2012.
